The night was vary long. Kriss tossed from side to side on her bed. Picture of the burning pile did not allowed her to sleep. She spent the whole night thinking about what had happened and what still could happen consequently. But she thought about these many worse situations in her life. She had always found a way, a solution, a good solution. She thought about Shaigan. She imagined the picture of him and Aniel together and fell asleep.
The rays coming through the window woke the archer. She slowly opened her eyes and raised her head. Kahlan was already on her feet, standing against the window. It seemed that Kriss was not the only one who had a bad night. She smiled at the woman. "Good morning."
Then turned at her son sleeping in his cot and smiled again to herslef. She was rather glad that he was still sleeping.

Kahlan tried to sleep all night, without success. Each time she closed her eyes, the picture of her father dead in her arms appeared to her, And right after, she was seeing Marek, holding his bloody sword and laughing out loud. That's when she opened her eyes, frightened. So she still fixed the ceiling, thinking of everything and nothing. She noticed that Kriss seemed to have an agitated night too. But that was not a surprise after the day they'd both passed.
Early in the morning, she stood up and went toward the window. She leaned against it, crossed her arms and watched the calm street, waiting for the sun to rise. A few moment later, she heard Kriss voice and turned around to face her. "Good morning" Kahlan answered, smiling. "I hope I didn't woke you."

Kriss yawned and stretched her arms. Then she sat on her bed and rubbed her sleepy eyes. She grabbed the plaid and put it one her arms. "No, I ususally wake up early"

"Something we have in common then" Kahlan said with a smile. She looked back toward the window. Everyone was slowly waking up in the streets. It was going to be a good sunny day. She walked toward the bathroom and asked. "I think I'll take a bath and...do you mind if I borrow you that dress I wore yesterday?" She definitely needed to do something concerning her wardrobe, especially if she planned to stay here.

Sleepy Kriss nodded at the woman with a little simle, "Sure, take it." She had not been wearing it for a very long time, anyway. But on the other hand she could not share all her clothes with Kahlan. Her new friend also could not sleep on the old mate. Kriss had already thought about cleaning and furnishing one more room at her attic. It was a good day for changes and the best ever for the shopping. Before Kahlan opened the bathroom's door Kriss'd aksed her, "How about little shopping today?" She gave her a smirk and added, "As soon as my workers arrive, I can leave the tavern for a while or two."

*Shopping* the word resonated in Kahlan's head. It was like Kriss had just read her mind. Besides, now that she had a permit, she had no reason to be afraid of getting out. "Sure! I'd love to." she finally said, a happy smile in her face. She made a wink before disappearing in the bathroom.

When Kahlan left the bathroom Kriss and Aniel took their morning ritual. When they all were ready, they went downsatirs for a breakfast. Kriss left her son with Kahlan by the table and helped in the kitchen. There were only two more guests who ate the breakfast there, the people who had rented the rooms last evening. After their meal the owner opened the tavern and as soon as her employee arrived Kriss agreed with her cook her outgoing. He promised to keep an eye on the employee and the whole tavern.
Kriss put on the beige coat and took her leather bag. She also took care that Aniel was appropriately dressed, too. And when she saw that Kahlan also was ready, she grabbed boy's hand and asked the woman, "Can we go?"

Kahlan would have wished to help Kriss, but there was not too many people in the tavern for the moment. So instead, she kept an eye on Aniel. The little boy was very calm. He was playing with his toys without taking care of the adults around him. Finally, the employee arrived and Kriss was ready to go. "Sure", Kahlan smiled at the woman, rose up and followed Kriss.

"Come on." Kriss said and they left the tavern. Basra's streets were full of life like everyday. Both women were passing the crowd. Kriss held Anile's hand not to lose him. It was not that far from tavern to the market. They got it very quickly. It was more crowded than the narrow streets which they had passed. Kriss slowed a bit so Kahlan could see what was on the each stall. "So what you want to buy?" She asked her firend and added before she answered, "There are stuff from around the world."

Kahlan followed Kriss closely through the streets. When they arrived, the young woman felt impressed and at the same time a little nervous. The market was bigger than in Galea. There were stalls out of sight. But she couldn't see them all as the place was crowded. That's what made her nervous. It was he first time she showed herself in public like this, since she's left her home. What if a guard asked her for her permit and realized that it was a fake? Or what if someone recognized her? Someone that could maybe warn Marek that she was still alive... Kriss's voice pulled her out from her thoughts. "Well," She said. "There seems to have everything we could search for. But for now, I don't really need a lot of things...except clothes, so I can stop borrowing yours." She gave a smirk before adding, "Besides, I don't have a lot of money with me". Kahlan had barely enough money to buy a simple dress, actually.

Kriss had expacted that she did not have a lot of money, she even had not thought that she could have any. She smiled at Kahlan and said, "Don't worry about the money. Choose whatever you want and let's just say you will execute it in tavern." As a tavern's owner Kriss did not complain of her financial status. She had used to live much prestige but she did not need it at all here in Basra.
Suddenly, she felt Anile who wanted to realse his hand. When the boy noticed that she had turned at him, he stretched out his hand as a sign of it that we did not want to walk anymore. Kriss shook her head, "Oh no. You've got your own legs and you can walk yourself. I know that Caipra use to carry you but I won't" She said with the austerity in her voice. Aniel did not like her answer. He put an big effort but he did free his hand and ran away from his mother. When she realized what he had just done, she qucikly looked around to sight him and called after her son, "Come back here! Anile Shaigansson, I warn you!" And she moved through the running boy.

It was a rather nice morning both with regards to the weather and with regards to the people around the market. No brawls so far, no swords drawn over the prices and as he could tell, no smuggle going on under the selling tables. Yet. Because as usual, Ziad was watchful, making his way across the market, doing his rounds, nodding to the merchants that he knew well and keeping a watchful eye on the ones he knew needed one. But no troubles so far.
When he had just decided to give things a little rest and had found a position near the side of the market place from which he could easily overlook the whole place, there was shouting and as he turned his head he saw a little boy dash across the street. He looked familar. Of course he did. His inconciderate mother had made him watch over the little rascal the night before. He was there in a few long strides and picked the kid off the ground before it could run any further.

Kriss led by the nerves and emotions, was following the boy. She was so upset that she ignored all the people around and elbowed through the crowd. She was about to catch Aniel but someone was faster than her. She almost bumped into that man. She raised her head and could not believe her own eyes.

Kahlan was watching a stall while listening to Kriss, when suddenly she heard her calling Aniel. She turned her head just in time to see the woman disappearing behind a wall of people. "Kriss!" she called, knowing that she was already too far to hear her. So she tried to follow her.
She passed another wall of people, saying "Sorry" for the umpteenth time when she finally saw her friend...in front of a guard. This one was holding Aniel. Kahlan didn't move any further and get closer to a stall, to observe them discretly.

Ziad raised an eyebrow when, as expected, he saw the boy´s mother hasten only a few metres after the child. He straightened, a hand on the kid´s shoulder. "Having an average day?" he asked. "Shopping...walking around the city...failing at parenting?"
When he spoke he noticed another woman in the crowd. He was not sure whether he had seen her before, but her face did not seem... familiar. His eyes rested on the stranger for a moment, before looking back at Kriss.
