"Well, you can't have a dinner with a man, whoever he is, dressed like that! without offending you, of course but..." Kahlan came closer to a stand full of dresses, took one of them, and put in on Kriss saying: "I think that a special occasion deserves a special dress."
Kahlan knew something about fashion. And for once, she wanted to do something to help Kriss, even if the tavern's owner didn't seem to like the idea....

Kriss looked down at her beige, travel coat with even more confused face. She really was not able to follow Kahlan's minds. .....have a dinner with a man.....special occasion
She was watching how woman was fitting a dress on her and she had no idea what her new friend had got in plans.
"Time please! What are talking about?!" She asked with a shadow of irritation.

Kahlan put the dress down and looked at the tavern's owner. She really didn't seem to follow her idea.
The young woman put her hands on her hips and answered. " I'm talking about YOU...and your date with the chief's guard tonight."

Now, Kriss could understand Kahlan's intentions very well but it had been much better when she had not known them. The mere thought of a date with this guy made her blood boil with anger. There was no one in this town that she could not stand more than him. Dinner which she had proposed to him was supposed to be only the form of thanks for staying with Aniel. Nothing else.
She browsed what made her glace look scowl.
"It's not a DATE!" She said with a menacing tone.

Kahlan had a moment of hesitation. The reaction of the tavern's owner had surprised her. She started to think she shouldn't have gone so far, talking about a date...she didn't know anything about the relation between Kriss and that guard after all. Maybe this dinner was really only about thanking him for staying with Aniel, the day before.
The young woman looked at her new friend and tried to say something to calm her a little.
"Alright! I'm sorry...It wasn't my intention to make you react like that. Let's just call it a dinner then."

Kriss calmed down a bit. She knew that her reaction was not really right but it was impulsive and uncontrolled. She put on her face something what could remind a smile somehow and whisperd,
"Sorry..." She bit her lips. She did not want her new friend to feel bad in any way.
"Let's take a look at this dress..." She said taking a dress which Kahlan had been fitting on her.

Kahlan felt reassured, it was not the moment to start a fight with her new friend, after all she did for her.
She just smiled at Kriss and looked at the dress.
"You know," She finally said, "a dress is always useful. I mean, It's not great to wear one every day, and believe me, I know something about it but...sometimes, for some occasions, it can be the perfect outfit."

Even if she did not seem to, Kriss was this kind of woman who really cared about her outfit or hairdo. Once upon a time she had used to have a varied wardrobe, the slaves which had used to combe her. Even her travel outfits had been specially designed for her. She also had used to have a man for whom it had been worth the tune. And she had lost everything in one winter night.
When she had come to Basra her costume had not been really important any more. The colors of mourning after the death of Shaigan disappeared not so long time ago.
For a while she thought that maybe it was a good moment to change it.
She smiled at Kahlan,
"I know something about it, too. But you are right, maybe I really need some changes."
Subconsciously, she meant not only the clothes.

Kahlan smiled again. She was happy to see that finally Kriss agreed with her.
She looked at the stand. There was not a lot of dresses on it, and they were not as beautiful as the ones she used to wear, until a few days ago.
However, one of them catched her attention. It was hidden behind some others, but when she took it, she discovered a beautiful red dress, quite simple, with a wide neckline and a few feathers at the shoulders.
"It's beautiful" Kahlan whispered. That's all she could say.
That dress reminded her of the masquerades she used to have in her castle, in Galea. Everyone was always staring at her and every gentlemen wished to have a dance with her.
She loved the masquerades, it was one of the few occasions where she liked to wear a dress.

Kriss looked at the dress which Kahlan had found. Indeed it was really beautiful. She could imagine her new firend wearing it. She smiled evilly to herself and said,
"We take it!"
She did not care about a price, she wanted them both to have some fun with this shopping. What clearly meant that the crazy ideas were really allowed.

Kahlan got out of her dreams when she heard Kriss.
"What? No, no, it's not necessary. It's too expensive and buying a dress is not one of my priority." She said, putting the dress back on the stand.

"Come on! Have a little fun! Don't worry about the price!"
Kriss took the dress back from the stand and put in on Kahlan, "It looks perfect" Then she nodded at the merchant in a turban. "We take it!"

Kahlan didn't have time to say anything that Kriss was already looking for her money.
However, she hadn't forgotten what she was looking for at first on this stand.
"Alright" She finally said "We take it...only if you take this one for you."
Kahlan took a dress she had seen a few minutes ago. It was a more simple dress than the red one, not very long, with different tones of brown. The young woman knew that it would fit the tavern's owner perfectly.
"Do you like it? I know you like that kind of colour, after seeing your different clothes in your chest." She said, smiling at Kriss.

The brown dress was for the knees, so not very long. It was rather simple but elegant in the same time.
"Yes, I like rather dark colors."
Kriss touched it. The material was soft to the touch. It seemed to be cotton but it was really good variety. She thought about her silk belt which could fit this dress. Indeed this little outfit was good for her.
"Okay, we can take it, too"

Kahlan made a big smile and watched her new friend buying the two dresses. Of course, she would repay her one day, as soon as she she would be able to.
The two ladies said goodbye to the merchant and continued their shopping for a few hours. They didn't buy a lot of things but they at least have spent a great time together.
On the way back to the tavern, Kahlan felt happy for the first time since her escape from Galea.
"Wow" She said "I haven't laughed like that for a long time".
