Khei nodded.
"He raised me up as best he could and when he said I was of an age that I should strike out into the world and make a life for myself he gave me what little money he had and helped make the arrangements for me to travel aboard the ship I came here on. Far as I know he's still back home."

"Back home?" she inquired. "Is he a relation? What of your family back home?" she blurted out.

Khei visibly grew uneasy. She didn't want to lie but she didn't think it would be a good idea to be entirely honest either..
"Well.. He's not actually related.. He raised me after he found me washed up on the shore of the island he lives on.. My family.."
She sighed and slumped lightly.
"My family is gone.."

"Oh," was all Thea could say. She felt terrible for Khei and felt terrible for bringing up such a sad subject. Thea knew what it was like to have no family. "I'm sorry."
The mood of her curiousity darkened and she fell into a silence. She regretted what she asked next. "W-When did it happen?" she asked, her voice almost a whisper.

Khei shrugged. She could leave out the details at the very least..
"It was a long time ago.. I was only a child at the time.."
She was tempted to tell about the demon but thought better of it. She had only met Thea hours ago. She surely didn't want to scare off a potential friend with too much information. At the very least now was not the time.

"I'm sorry," she said again. "I lost my family at a young age as well. Well, uh, it's not the easiest thing in the world."
She bit her lip and fidgeted with a lock of hair, avoiding Khei's eyes. She composed herself.
"So what was you homeland like?" she said, trying for a lighter topic.

Khei fidgeted but nodded, trying to compose herself and hide her unease.
"Well where I was born was just a simple farming village. It was nothing special I guess.. "
She paused, running the details through her head, trying to work out the story in a way that wouldn't expose herself..
"After I lost my family and ended up on my master's island.. well he lived in a simple house near the beach. We mostly tended a small garden and fished for food."

"That sounds nice," Thea responded with a smile. She rubbed her eyes. Apparently the little "adventure" of today had worn her down a bit.
Thea looked at Khei's eyes, which were quite startling. She didn't know what but she sensed something a about Khei...something different... The fire glinted off of the braces around Khei's wrists.
"Where did you get those?" she asked curiously. Curiousity killed the cat but it didn't mean in would kill Thea. She often blurted things out without thinking about things. "Are they a family heirloom or a token of your home? I saw you fidgeting with them before."

Khei tensed up a bit at the mention of her bracers. She cursed herself silently for making such a habit of fidgeting with them when nervousness got the best of her. She looked at them once again before answering.
"They were a gift from my master before he sent me off on that voyage. He.."
She paused thinking of how to phrase it..
"He thought they'd be useful in my journey.."

Anthea looked at her curiously.
"How so, if I may ask?" she inquired.

Khei racked her brain for a good answer that wasn't a lie but spared the truth as well. She was running otu of options to be honest.
"Well.. They keep things from becoming too complicated for me.. With them I'm no different than anyone else."

Thea mulled this over for a moment. The braces must be a good luck charm, or something along the lines of that, to Khei. All though Khei gave good answers to the questions she asked, they were still vague. Khei must want to keep her past to herself, she deduced. She couldn't blame Khei at all. They had only known each other for not even half a day.
"Different?" she said, using Khei's word, her thoughts flowing out through her words. "I suppose we're all different, but I think that's what makes us all the same, being different."
She was silent for a moment and took another sip from her soup.
She recalled what Khei said. They keep things from becoming too complicated for me... With them I'm no different than anyone else. It repeated in her mind...
"What do you mean "complicated"?" she asked, ignoring her soup.

Khei seemingly froze. She couldn't bring herself to actually just lie. Even being that her entire existence as a human was a lie in of itself, she had been raised with the strict concept that lying was one of the greater crimes one could commit. Her mind brought memories from her childhood with the old mage, before he gave her the bracers. The cruelty of children was often underestimated. She dreaded having to expose herself. Particularly at the risk of losing a would be friend. She hardened her resolve that telling the truth would be, as she had always been assured, the best path and with a hard swallow she answered.
"I won't lie to you as I was not raised to lie no matter what the circumstances."
She folded her arms in a sort of defensive manner, squeezing her upper arms with her hands.
"My bracers have some sort of magic seal that I don't understand myself. They allow me to be as I am.."
She could only look down into what was left of her soup as she spoke.
"I.. I'm not.. what I appear.. to be..."
She bit her lip as she struggled with he last bit..
"I'm not actually human.."
She winced and mentally braced for what she thought could be the only response she could expect. Surely either she'd be thought of as crazy or some monster. Either way she expected no less than being thrown into the streets, possibly being exposed to the rest of the city at which point she would be forced to flee the city.

Thea nearly fell out of her chair. Magic. Was Khei playing her the fool? Of course Thea had heard of magic, it was used by some in her homeland. But not being human? She heard of demonic entities being on Earth, there was one very famous one known all over the West from where she was from. But maybe Khei was not demonic...Hush, she commanded her thoughts. How could she consider inplausible conclusions?
She stood up from the chair and walked to the fire, not looking at Khei. She watch the flames flicker and cast eery shadows over the room. Her gaze never left the fire. Though Khei may be a stranger, something about her was honest. She is a stranger, how much do you really know about her? she asked herself, doubt filling through out her. Unfortunately Thea's pride got the better of her and took the chance of not being played a fool. She turned her head towards Khei. Khei seemed so harmless...
"Khei, are you being serious with me or just playing a joke?" she asked, keeping her voice neutral.

Khei felt the need to squirm in her chair as an uncomfortable silence filled the air. She watched Thea as she seemed lost in thought, watching the dancing flames of the fire. She could feel a lump in her throat almost suffocating her as Thea returned the the table and questioned her truthfulness. She couldn't blame her. Had it been the other way 'round she could imagine she'd ask the same question.
She hung her head with a heavy sigh.
"I wish I was joking. Sadly it's true.. Without these bracers I would be revealed for what I really am."
