Aww, that's a pity. I bet they would have been awesome to watch. Hmm, that reminds me ... the nights are quite clear nowadays and wikipedia says they're active till about 23rd ... maybe I'll be lucky enough to see some.

Yeah, maybe next year. Of course, there is no guarantee that the weather will be clear next year. Did you see them?

Gah, I always miss stuff like that. And it´s not easy to record it with a camcorder anyways, Bryn.

For anyone who hasn´t read Dan Browns "The Lost Symbol" yet and is planning to: This is no spoiler to the plot, it´s an excerpt from one of the dialogs between two main characters. I found this rather interesting and would like to know what you others think of it.
"Perhaps you´ve heard," Katherine said, softly now "about the brain scans taken of Yogis when they meditate? The human brain, in advanced states of focus, will physically create a waxlike substance from the pineal gland. This brain secretion is unlike anything in the body. It has an incredible healing effect, can literally regenerate cells and mayb be one of the reasons yogis live so long. This is real science, Robert. This substance has inconceivable properties and can be created only by a mind that his highly turned to a deeply focused state." [...] Katherine´s words were coming out in rapid-fire succession now, explaining how this same magical substance appeared throughout the Ancient Mysteries: Nectar of the Gods, Elixir of Life, Fountain of Youth, Philosopher´s Stone, ambrosia, dew, ojas, soma. [...] "It sounds like your work in Noetics will be a quantum leap forward." "Or backward," she said. "The ancients already knew many of the scientific truths we´re now rediscovering. Within a matter of years, modern man will be forced to accept what is now unthinkable: our minds can generate energy capably of transforming physical matter." She paused. "Particles react to our thoughts .. which means our thoughts have the power to change the world."
There are other passages in the book refering to similar ideas. Experiments conducted to prove that the human mind and soul have a physical weight or experiments that prove that shared thought can have an effect (such as prayer experiments) or the discussion about healing miracles interpreted simply as a well trained, talented mind that has unlocked part of its potential.
I´m not saying that I believe all of this, but I am intrigued. Thoughts?

They say healing miracles are caused by transferring electrical impulses created by one's neurons.
Yes, the brain, along with all cells, can heal itself. Neurons are rather complex cells and usually take longer than other cells to regenerate.
As for ancients, yes, I believe we lost a lot of ancient knowledge due to the destruction of civilizations and the Dark Ages. For example, how did the ancient Maya know that on December 12, 2012 five planets will align with the sun? It only happens once every 200,000 years.
And for matter reacting with the mind, I don't think that would happen. However, if your neurons could create enough energy, you could transfer it into a eraser, causing all the atoms to jump to the excited state and oscillate in the same direction, resulting in the eraser to fly off the ground.

There sure is a lot of lost knowledge that was lost in the Middle Ages or earlier, partly I think also because when science sat in, they started from the scratch, not the more advanced stuff in Europe, overlayering an wiping out old knowledge of then more advanced cultures that came before them.
I am kind of sceptical towards the mind over matter thing , too, but I believe we still know too little about how our brains work and what they can do. I mean, if you showed a person the Middle Ages our world and what we can do with things we created and that are simple and easy for us such as the internet, antibiotics, fireworks or CGI effects, they would think us to possess superhuman powers. Maybe, if we could look into the year 2500 we would think the same because maybe then we will be able to direct computers with brain impulses and the like. The technology for it is not there, yet, but I would think that a possibility, with the right equipment.

Brain impulses and technology are kind-of opposites, you know. Internet, fireworks, antibiotic, and CGI effects have nothing to do with brain impulses. For brain impulses, we don't need technology.
