Name:
Kalani
Meaning:
the heavens {Hawaiian}
Outer appearance:
At first glance, this young lady would appear to be the epitome of a perfect aristocrat. She is tall, slender of build, with pale skin, dark brown hair, and sky-blue eyes. A more notably observant person would see much more to this former-ward-of-a-king-turned-merchant. They might take note of the calluses formed from climbing trees, riding horses, or use of the bow in hunting, or any of the various other tomboyish activities she wholeheartedly took part in as a child. They might spot the twinkle of mischief and the longing for more adventure in those eyes the color of the sky. After all, appearances aren't everything....
Strengths and skills:
Though competent enough with the bow when it comes to hunting, Kalani has never, ever taken part of a battle and knows nothing of how to fight, aside from the sort of rough-housing she took part in as a child, though she would like to learn. She is a very shrewd, yet honest, businesswoman and has a keen head for numbers, leading her to become quite wealthy. She also has a latent ability for both telepathy and visions -- both of which she knows nothing about. All she knows is that there are times when she has very terrible nightmares, but she has not yet figured out what they really are.
Character:
Despite having had to mature quickly since running away from home, Kalani is still very much a tomboy at heart. She is not one to back down from any conflict, no matter what sort it is, especially if wrong is trying to triumph over right. It is a trait that has gotten her into trouble before, as she dared to speak against the prince Casib and his advisor because of the wrongs she say being perpetrated. She has a good heart and a generous spirit, and willingly gives to those less fortunate than herself. She owns only a modest home -- though she could easily afford a grand mansion -- and detests those wealthy folks who like to peacock their wealth about the city as though they were something especially grand. A sense of mischief and humor has given her the opportunity to bring such folks down a peg or two on more than one occasion, though she is careful to keep anyone from realizing who played a trick on them. She also tends to become attached to those she considers friends, even if she has only known them a short time.
Whether it be because of the fact that she has been adopted twice or whether it be just a simple quirk of her nature, she tends to see all those she befriends as family.
Bio:
Kalani was born in a kingdom that would now be Wales/Scotland and, having been orphaned at a young age and knowing nothing about her birth parents, was made a ward of the king (who was good friends with her father and promised to take care of her). She and the crown prince were of the same age and grew up together. In fact, it wasn't until they were 10 years old that they found out that they weren't twins, which they had always just assumed before that time. More importantly, they discovered that his parents planned for them to wed when they were older. This thought repulsed both of them; it would be like in modern times if you found out your parents were planning to marry you to your brother! At first they tried convincing his parents, but when that didn't work, they arranged for her to flee by night as far as possible, promising to keep in touch as much as possible.
She eventually ended up in Baghdad where she was taken under the wing of a merchant family. Showing great aptitude with numbers and business, by the time she was fifteen she was practically running the business on her own, giving the merchant and his family plenty of leisure time. By the time she was seventeen, she had even expanded his business for him, so that he had something of a "chain" of shops; one shop in Baghdad (the original) and another opening in Basra. When the merchant died quite suddenly, his wife was wealthy enough that she needed no involvement in the business (save an annuity that the girl promised the merchant's surviving family), and so she takes over completely. By now she is approximately twenty-five and well established as a young business-woman. For a short time she was quite poor, during the time when Prince Casib was being advised by Admir, as she said something less than complimentary about the new adviser and spoke out against the wrongs she saw perpetrated by the adviser, as well as by the prince and escaped imprisonment only by paying an enormous fine. She was fortunate to be such an able merchant, as she did eventually regain what was lost through shrewd -- yet very honest! -- business efforts and by living in Basra for a while, until Sinbad and the others took care of Admir.
For quite some time she has been the preferred provider of supplies and such to the Nomad's crew. Also, she prefers to send her cargo on their ship, rather than any other, as she trusts them very much to take care of what she sends with them. Whenever they arrive in port, she loves to hear tales of their adventures and likes, on rare occasions when business makes it possible, to go with her cargo. She sees the main members of the crew almost like extended family. Also, she sends letters via the Nomad to her "brother" back where she came from and he sends them back via the Nomad, but his parents know nothing about their continued correspondence.

Inspiration:
Very remotely inspired by Morgana of the Merlin tv series; and I *emphasize* the remotely. I'd only ever seen a fanvid (set to the music of Mordred's Lullaby; chilling tune, that one....), but hadn't gotten around to watching the episode the fanvid was set to. I also read a bit on her in the wiki for the show. However, anyone who is at all familiar with the show would not probably recognize Kalani as being in any way like Morgana. Mostly the link between them is that Kalani has an ability in telepathy/visions, as does Morgana from what I've read and what little I saw of the show. And that they're both wards of a king, though their relationship to the respective guardians (as well as adopted siblings) is completely different...
((Now, hopefully I've done this right! If there is anything I need to fix/change/edit/whatever, please let me know!))
