Well, first off you have to upload your avatar to an image hosting site like photobucket.com (needs free registration) or imagehost.org (no registration required). The av should already have the size 100x100, however, the board will automatically adjust that if you use another size.
When having uploaded your av to one of the sites you will be offered several links:

Out of those you have to take the "direct link" (marked with green).
Now, to use the avatar go into "profile" and then "Modify profile" (marked with orange). There you will see the lines where you can enter an url for the av.
