Name:
Doubar
Position:
The Nomad’s first mate
Nick name:
Tubby (credits go to Maeve)
Age:
36
Outer appearance:
Doubar has the most impressive statute of all the crew members. His big belly and general size are most likely what others notice first about him. Thanks to that he once has been described as “the roaring giant” which especially when being in a fight fits him quite well.
The first mate is the oldest aboard the ship. He wears his long and slightly curly hair tied back into a neat plait while his face is framed by a dark blond beard. Many years ago he had his left ear pierced and ever since has a golden earring gilding that part.
His clothes are not any different to the common sailor ones: lose blue pants with a striped linen shirt that’s just warm enough to keep him from freezing in a cool breeze, yet not too thick to make him sweat in the sun. A big belt, to which his sword is attached, a brown leather glove worn at is right hand, black leather boots and a greyish head band complete his outfit.
Strengths and skills:
Doubar is by far the strongest of the Nomad crew. He is able to bend iron bars and smash in doors no other would have been able to open. Thus, at many times he needs no more than his mere strength to get rid of any opponents.
Still, in addition to his forceful punches he also handles the sword quite well, but due to his constitution lacks the agility other crew members show with this skill.
Character:
“Big muscles, big belly, big mouth … little brain” – that’s what most people think about him.
In fact, Doubar can be quite impulsive and often acts out of the moment while maybe he should have thought twice before saying or doing something, but one thing he for sure is not: stupid! He knows how to handle a fight, how to act around sultans and kings and how to enjoy the bright sides of life – such as women, music and wine. He is gifted with the ability to spread his good mood and make everything look not as bad as it in reality might be.
Sinbad once had said about him that he was still being a big kid – and somehow that’s exactly what is true. The first mate has the outer appearance of a man in his early-forties, a giant’s strength, a lion’s roar … and a child’s heart. If once he trusts someone he will stand for them with all his might and even risk his life to only save theirs. He will sacrifice everything only to make sure those he cares about are well and safe.
And the first one to notice this was his little brother. Sinbad is Doubar’s soft spot and even if he knows that the boy has already become a man and even captain of his own ship, the first mate will never fully stop to be protective towards him. He will for all his life watch him and be to him whatever he needs: a father, a friend and a brother. As a natural consequence of this, the first mate began to develop a similar kind of feeling towards the fiery redhead that had entered the Nomad’s chronicles about two years ago.
Right from the moment Maeve had stepped onboard Doubar had been able to tell from the looks Sinbad gave her that the Celt had something special about her that was going to affect his little brother a big deal in the future. And it didn’t take him all that long to grow fond of the young sorceress himself ... although at first he didn’t like the thought of a woman being on a ship at all. Nowadays however, the first mate can’t really believe that he ever doubted a woman’s capability for sailing.
Concerning the other crew-members you can say that Doubar shares a good relation with everyone. He feels at ease when the moor is around and trusts him with his life when being in a fight. The same just holds for Bryn who he accepted to be their new sorceress and friend. He sometimes wonders about her story, though, and the reason just why she and Sinbad share the same strange kind of jewellery, but will never ask her as he doesn’t want to hurt her by reminding her of her lost past.
Last but not least there’s Firouz. Sinbad and he have known him even before the Nomad’s journeys began. Doubar considers the scientist to be a close friend but still he sometimes also feels annoyed by him. His scientifical mumbo-jumbo is something the first mate did never understand and doesn’t want to either. And besides, if any of Firouz’ inventions ever has a malfunction it’s most likely Doubar who’ll be the victim of it.
Bio:
Doubar has been born to a family of merchants who lived in a small town near Baghdad. His mother – the beautiful Lady Maea – and her husband lead a good life as they provided not only the area they lived in but also some stables of the bazaar of Baghdad with goods sailors brought from all over the world. While his father was often away for days the boy has mainly been raised by his kind-hearted mother who taught him what she found to be most important in life: trust, honesty and good. Doubar started to live up to those ideals, always trying to show his mother just how much he worshiped her words. When he was old enough to accompany his father to the bazaars young Doubar learned the basics of trading and how to act around wealthy and powerful men and even began to show some talent to a merchant’s business himself.
Although liking the life he lead as an only-child Doubar also welcomed the news his mother brought to the family on his eighth birthday: a new baby.
Sinbad, as they decided to call him, was born about half a year later. The moment when his mother handed him over the little and helpless bundle was one Doubar would never forget in his life.
“This is your little brother. Look at him, Doubar”, he heard the Lady’s words surround him while his eyes locked with those deep blue ones the baby had, “He will grow but still one thing from now on will never change: you’ll be his big brother. Take care of him, Doubar – whenever he needs you. Promise me.”
As young as he himself had been, Doubar had not really been able to understand just what she was talking about. His head had moved unconsciously as he simply affirmed what she was asking him for. So little had he known, that all too soon he had to fulfil it…
Two days after Sinbad’s first birthday the family left the port of Baghdad to sail towards the northern territories. Although the day started as a sunny one, all too soon grey clouds began to form. Rain started to poor from the skies and the winds howled like hungry beasts that were about to strike. The captain did his best to bring the ship safely through the storm ... but it was no use. A wave, dark and menacing devoured the ship, forcing all on deck to surrender to the cold element that surrounded them. As if by miracle only Doubar and his younger brother made it out of the sinking hull. Grabbing some loose plank and holding onto it for both their dear lives depended on not losing the grip, Doubar somehow managed to make it back ashore alive where soon he had been found by an old man. The grey haired brought them to a local healer, made sure they got some food and water and afterwards took them to stay at his place.
Miraculously enough both kids had suffered only minor injuries, but the wounds the storm had caused in Doubar’s soul ran deeper than any cut could ever have been. The first evening the boy had sat down in front of the old man’s house, crying for the family he had lost, crying for the future he would have to pass alone … not yet alone. A desperate whimper had come from the inside, remembering him of the toddler who was all what was left of his former life. Doubar at first had hesitated, but suddenly heard his mother’s words echo in his head. He had sworn to protect him, to be to him whatever he would need. And Sinbad needed a family. He needed him. That was what he really knew and all what mattered.
To his big surprise the old man, who had introduced himself as a certain DimDim, offered the nine year old to put the siblings up. The only thing he for this demanded was that both brothers would become his apprentices. And Doubar accepted. The following years the old sorcerer became a surrogate father to them - a teacher and their life-saver of some sort. While the old man taught the boys the way of magic and nature, Doubar taught Sinbad all what he knew about trading from their father and all what he knew about life from their mother. He did everything to grant him at least part of the untroubled childhood he felt the young one deserved. And as Sinbad grew Doubar began to realize just how much the boy united both his parents’ attributes: the sense for adventures and freedom their father had also carried inside as well as the kind-heartedness and friendliness his mother had shown. The young one made friends so easily but unfortunately so he did with opponents.
Haroun and his gang were surely the ones that hated him the most and they didn’t bother to hide that. They chased the orphan through the streets and often enough it had been only Doubar who was able to stop them. And when, on this one fateful day he had not been near, he felt like having failed. Although deep inside he knew it had not been his fault, Doubar still felt responsible for Lee’s death. In this one moment his little brother had needed him, he hadn’t been there. Still, Sinbad did not blame him. Instead he blamed the Seas. He swore to tame them and become their master.
Only days later young Sinbad asked Doubar to help him fulfil that quest. With the permission of DimDim Doubar, who had been in his late teens back then, chartered on a ship that belonged to the band of the “Adventurers”. For long he had already worked for them whenever they had set foot on the port and so they appreciated his wish to come along and become a sailor. And they even granted him to bring Sinbad along. With only ten years the boy was by far the youngest on deck and so the captain chose to give him a job that would fit him: cabin boy.
So the brothers began to sail together. The younger one's skills soon outranking the older one’s, Sinbad became sailor at the age of only twelve. Only three years later he was granted the chance of proving himself as the captain of his own ship. And who would he have found more trustworthy to be his first mate than his big brother?
From this day on Doubar and Sinbad sailed the seas together. Merchants they became and soon their wealth exceeded even their parent’s one... Until, one night, in a similar dark one in which Doubar had already lost the biggest part of his family, the sailor had to face this fate again. The ship the siblings travelled with sank in the rage of a storm but this time Doubar had not been able to save the one he felt responsible for. With some other sailors that somehow had survived the storm he returned to Baghdad. He tried to keep the business he and Sinbad had successfully started alive, but as times changed he had to realize that not only was sailing without Sinbad totally different but also that the world around him grew darker. Thus, Doubar gave up their business and hired at a local fleet - becoming a simple sailor that only carryied out instructions that had been given by the rich.
Having been imprisoned for some brawl he had started, two years after the terrible storm, at the last place he had expected him to show up, Doubar met again whom he had thought to be dead for so long: Sinbad. And after hearing about the trouble the Calif of Baghdad was actually in, the brothers got a second chance to start all over again. In recognition of their help in saving the prince Casib’s fiancée the Calif provided Sinbad with a new ship and returned their former merchants status to him and Doubar.
Gathering both – old and new friends the brothers finally set sail together again...
