alex: Tornadoes need a flat land mass where two air masses can meet. Typical tornado-friendly places are in the midwest of the United States, in Argentina, and in Mongolia.

@wind: but they are horrifying, right? Well, if it comes at you, then you are dead. But tornadoes can destroy a house but leave another one not far away untouched. There are tornado or storm chasers.

Actually how they calcalute the extent of a tornado is not by its size, but by the damage it does.

Cool cloud pics. Even though I definitely prefer to see those formations on a pic and not in real if they really are connected to tornados. x)

portal.gmx.net/de/themen/wissen/tiere/9932484-Delfinhirn-gleicht-dem-des-Menschen.html#.00000002Unfortunately this article is in German but I found it so interesting I decided to translate it: Dolphins nearly as intelligent as humans San Diego – The fact that dolphins are intelligent has been widely known ever since “Flipper” and countless animal park live shows. But it has only recently been discovered that their brains are comparable to or even as complex as human brains. US scientist Lori Marino of Emory University in Atlanta did research on the brains of three dolphins. In relation to their size, dolphins have a little less brain mass than humans. However, there are more folds in it and thus a bigger surface which could make up for this shortcoming. The folding occur particularly around the Neocortex, a brain structure responsible for complex thoughts and self consciousness. No other species in the word has a brain structure comparable to the dolphin in this respect, Marino reported on the annual meeting of the American science union AAAS in Sandiago which ended last Monday. Whereas the competition for highest intelligence on the planet remains undecided between human and dolphin for now, there is one loser that can already be named however. Apes like shimpanzees and gorillas lack behind noticeably in comparison with dolphins. Monkey brains are just half the size the brains of other animals their size. In comparison, dolphin brains are five times bigger as could be expected judging from their body size. In comparison to other animals of his weight, humans possess even seven times as much brain. And even with regards to structure and other characteristics of the brain, apes lack far behind after dolphin on a third place when it comes to recent discoveries. “What does this mean for us?” ethics professor Thomas White of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles asked on a congress of the world´s biggest science organizations. According to a list of criteria White showed that dolphins meet all expectations that are necessary to be defined as individuals. They possess the ability for positive and negative experiences, emotions, self consciesness and they are capable of directing and controlling their behavior. Dolphins recognize each other and treat each other with respect, often even with open affection as White quoted from numerous studies. They can recognize themselves in a mirror – something that only humans and some ape species are capable of – they act in an analytical and planned way and are capable of problem solving. Additionally they have the capacity and ability to emotionally and intensively suffer for longer time spans. This combination of cognitive capacities and vulnerability was thought to be something only humans possessed. However, if dolphins acquired the same abilities over their 60 million years of evolution, they would have to be entitled to the same rights, humans claim for themselves, the etics professor argued. In that case, dolphins mustn´t be kept and sold “like slaves” for animal shows or hunted down and slaughtered in the Pacific, they could not be seen as property, but would have to be treated with respect. For humans, dolphins offer the chance of developing a new understanding of ethics which could “lead to a change or turning point in the relationship of homo sapiens and other intelligend species on our planet.”
