No, disappointed is something different. Fremdschämen goes more into the direction of your second example, even though that´s not quite it. "Fremdschämen" you only do for someone you do not know, for a stranger, for someone in public, on TV etc. That´s what makes it so funny and irrational. When you blush from embarassment because you see something totally embarassing on TV or when you see a total stranger to something embarassing in public, that´s "Fremdschämen"

@sinbad: Did you learn British English or American English. They are slightly different. Because, as far as I know, that is what it means in America. In Britain, I dono. And if you are foreign, then most likely you learned British English.

I learned British Englsh at school, but picked up some American stuff on my way. However my spelling is British, as is my accent. Hm... I´m not sure if there is a difference between British and American English in that case. My guess would simply be that the German term is a word that does not have an equivalent in the English language (also since no dictionary offes any translation), so I can merely describe it to get as close to its concept as possible. There being no equivalent is possible I think because the term Fremdschämen has been around in the German language for no more than a couple of years.

*nods in agreement* Although I am no teacher and most likely haven't even nearly the knowledge Sinbad has, I would agree with her. It's a term that exists only a couple of years - so there isn't nesessarily a proper translation for it.

Maybe you did not look hard enough. I see a young girl with a beautiful smile and hair. I see a girl with fire in her eyes, something I have been searching for. And most of all, I see a girl who is kind and strong and won't take any crap from nobody.
Now look again and tell me what you see.
