Dermott needed a long while to recollect all the things that Bryn had just said. Her speech looked like a stream of consciousness, where she placed a confusing mixture of doubts, questions, and suppositions which showed all her emotional interest and confusion.
She was obviously disappointed because of Sinbad’s silence about Rumina, and he was aware of her wishes, but at the same time he understood the captain. Even if he wanted to reassure the sorceress, he didn’t feel like blaming him, because being used to be cautious and vigilant, for the hawk was easy to picture the reasons which make people avoid a conversation.
Rumina didn’t appear for over a year, as if she was vanished in the thin air. And even though he was sure she was still alive, maybe for the others she was starting to became just one of the many dark creatures they have encountered during their journeys. A creature who belonged to that past where Bryn hadn’t still joined the Nomad.
Possibly this was the only reason that pushed all the other crewmembers to not telling her. Because from her previous outburst, he could easily deduce that none of them, included himself, never mentioned once the dark witch to her.
“Bryn, don’t take it as a personal thing. Sinbad didn’t share a lot of things lately, not only about Rumina or Maeve, and especially not only with you, but with everybody else. He hadn’t been exactly the talkative type during this last year.
But I can easily see your point. It’s right to be worried and informed for an eventuality like this. If you really feel the need to be prepared, you can think of paying a visit to Caipra, once we reach Basra’s port. I’m sure she’ll be able to help you in understanding and controlling better your powers”
He paused for a while, hoping that this prospect could be able to appease her a little. Then he continued:
“None of us know what really happened when Maeve disappeared, and how much Rumina was involved in this. You were already here when Master Dim-Dim broke his magical prison for a while, and send us his channeled message. We know as much as you”.
This was a bitter and undeniable truth. They had been groping in the dark for a long year, without any clue about the unleashing cause of the day of the storm. He was aware of this while answering her last question with a general, and suitable answer. He was determined not to go any further, the reason behind Maeve's decision to study magic with master Dim-Dim were personal and private, and only her could decided if she wanted to share it or not.
“If you think of it, it is not so strange that the two of them got stuck into magical battles. Maeve was the Nomad’s resident sorceress, who decided to stay on board in order to find again her master. And whenever Rumina appeared, bothering the crew, it was obvious that the two of them always ended up fighting, considering that nobody else practiced magic on board.”
While sending this last though into Bryn’s mind Dermott noticed a timid ray of light entering the cabin from the window above his friend’s bed. It was already dawn.
