Bryn was helping Firouz with making more of his exploding sticks. She collected any chemicals Firouz may need. “Can you hand me that green glass jar marked ‘oil.”

Bryn looked for the jar, but eventually found it among Firouz’s nearly two dozen collections of jars. ‘Hmm, lets see’ she thought. ‘Lavender, sunflower extract, tree sap, gun powder, seaweed, copper salts, table salt, pine bark, animal fat, wax, honey, fish scales, sharks teeth, seashells, super glue, cumin, fennel, caraway, castor, aloe, safflower, pomegranates botanical, fish oil and linseed oil. Man, he has quite a collection.’ She picked up the fish oil and linseed oil. “Which one do you want?”

Firouz turned his head to look at Bryn and saw the two jars she was holding. “The fish oil.”

Bryn put down the linseed oil and handed the fish oil to Firouz, who mixed it in a bowl with some other ingredients Bryn didn’t want to ask. Firouz then asked her to hold the shell of his exploding stick while he poured the mixture into it. After he was finished pouring, he closed the opening and placed a string at the top. But before he did this, Firouz measured the string, wrote some calculations down, and wrote something on the side of the exploding stick.

“Well one done, 39 more to go.”

‘39? He can’t be serious.’ But Bryn just shrugged off the thought, deciding not to question the inventor. Instead, she got the next stick ready. “The captain did not sound very pleased that you caused an explosion below deck,” she said in a low tone.

Firouz looked at her with questioning eyes. “It was a minor explosion. Besides I had everything under control. And Sinbad trusts me.”

Bryn smile at this and chuckled. "As you say so."

Bryn, worried that she may anger the inventor, calmly said, “Well, you did not really have everything under control.”

Firouz gave her a questioning look. “Oh and why is that?”

Bryn was getting more worried. ‘Great, now he is questioning me. Damn, should have kept your mouth shut, Bryn. You are just going to cause an argument one of these days.’ Bryn looked at the inventor with her brown eyes and pondered on what to say, knowing that Firouz was expecting a logical response. “Well…the explosion…it was partly contained…by me.” She prayed this wouldn’t upset him more.

Firouz absorbed what Bryn had just told him. “Oh, well, thank you, then. I guess I should have you around more often, just in case something happens.” He returned his attention back to the stirring bowl.

‘Few, that was close,’ Bryn thought to herself. She smiled and continued helping him make the exploding sticks.
After several hours, the work was done. Bryn was relieved. She was getting a little impatient.

The inventor turned to look at Bryn. "Thank you for all your help. I think I will get a little rest now."
