Hm.. *has been wondering* Circus in the way we know it didn´t appear before the 18th century whereas in Antiquity "Circus" probably referred to the Latin word for "circle" (cause of the place where circus games were held, Circus Maximus etc.)
What comes to my mind other than that are groups of travelling jugglers and artists who were travelling around the markets in Europe in Medieval times. Maybe there was something similar to that in the orient, too, but I´m not too firm on cultural history in that area. If there were, I would guess that they would have been travellers that were seen like vagabonds, no real home, no real social acceptance.

She could have been part of a Roman circus? Or an acrobat show? They were big back in ancient times. It says it one of them encyclopedias.

I think the acrobat show might work best time wise. Also maybe in connection with her being a runaway. Gypsies might be more tricky because as far as I am aware they didn´t show up before roughly 1000 years ago.

The runaway gypsy/troublemaker plot seems cool.

should she have been a runaway and joined up with some gypsies or should she have been born a gypsy and have runaway from her family? I don't know why but i like the word "gypsy".

Gypsies - "Their subsequent westward migration, possibly in waves, is believed to have occurred between 500 A.D. and 1000 A.D." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_people Could work. And about circuses: "In China's Eastern Han Dynasty, scholar Zhang Heng was one of the first to describe acrobatic theme shows in the royal palaces in his writing "Ode to the Western Capital". A grand acrobatic show was held by Emperor Wu of Han in 108 BC for foreign guests." "The Circus Maximus (Latin for great or large circus, in Italian Circo Massimo) is an ancient Roman chariot racing stadium and mass entertainment venue located in Rome. Situated in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills, it was the first and largest Chariot Racing Stadium in ancient Rome." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circus_Maximus

maybe ran away from her home and joined a travelling acrobat troup? I like the idea that she was treated poorly and ran away and joined the circus/acrobat troup to get money. Forget the gypsy idea.

Great! Can't wait for you to join us and cause trouble to the crew. Your bio could allow you to join early. Lets say that there will be a show in Basra soon. I guess we could say that shows, especially those for Omar, became common in Basra. Omar wanted some more "entertainment" for his city.
