Dark. It was dark. And cold. Coldness was claiming her very heart and darkness it was that surrounded her. She wanted to open her eyes, to see what was there … where was “there” but she couldn’t. She wanted to speak out, to ask for help … but she found no words to use. She wanted to go, to move … but there was nothing to be moved. She wanted to know where she was … who she was … but she found her mind to be empty. Everything seemed to be empty. Like there was nothing that existed in this world but her. And this world was surrounding her like a mist – leaving no space for her breathe, no chance for her to live.
She wanted to escape and fear gripped her heart as she struggled to make it out of whatever it was that she was in. But once again there was nothing she could do. Nothing to move, nothing to say, no one to turn to. She was alone – not knowing who or where she was, feeling lonely and frightened. Desperately she tried to remember something, anything that could help her understand. But in her head nothing existed … nothing but one thing. There was a memory. Faint and blurred it lay hidden in her mind. She tried to reach out to it, tried to get a hold of it. And suddenly there it was. A voice. A voice she knew. It was speaking to her, pleading her to wish them luck. Something was glistening. And she answered…
“Always.”
It echoed in her mind. Over and over again it repeated itself, getting louder each time she heard it. Always. She had sworn it; had promised to always wish them luck and protect them.
Them. Sinbad and Doubar. Her sons.
Suddenly her eyes shot wide open and she winced at the light that instantly crashed upon them. And with the light came the memory. It was all there again. She was there again.
Mala breathed in deeply as her heart beat fast in her chest. It had happened again. She awakened. Slowly she raised her trembling hands to look at them. Young skin was reaching her sight and her golden bracelets reflected the silver strays of sunlight. It had happened again. Hesitantly she turned around and let her eyes meet the same misty blue they had met the first time. Gentle waves were rocking her soul in the depths of their ocean. The depths that had been meant to keep her a prisoner till the end of all times. The ghost sighed silently as this one memory returned to her as well. The day she had died. The day she had had to leave those behind who meant more to her than anything else on this world ever had. She would not break her promise.
Never.
Slowly, hesitantly, she closed her eyes, concentrating on the waves that passed her by. She would leave this place. Again. She would use the power of the element that could not be controlled - not by men and not by the devil.
Feeling her spirit melt into the depths that surrounded her, the vision of the young woman finally weakened and with a last breath she took, she escaped.
She saw it. Saw the ship that carried those who meant the world to her. She knew they couldn’t see her, knew they wouldn’t hear her even if she called for them. The time had not come yet. And she knew that. Sadly she let her gaze linger on the ship, feeling a wave of sadness wash over her. His wounded heart had revealed itself to him. Finally. Thanks to Scratch and herself his soul was remembering again. He remembered who he really was and even though she knew and felt how much this hurt him she was grateful for it. He would find his way back. His friends and family would help him – secure him when she couldn’t. His wounded heart would heal. Some day.
But why am I here?
The young woman frowned deeply as this thought entered her head. Why had she awoken so soon again? There had to be a reason. Hesitantly she, for one more time, closed her eyes and with this let the image of the Nomad disappear. Melting into the seas again, the ghost searched for all the traces of good and evil that walked this world.
So many souls. So much light. And so much darkness. It was all there and she had troubles sorting out which ones of them could be important to her. But, eventually, there it was. A dark force that was rising to claim what she had vowed to protect at all costs: her younger child. That was the reason why her restless soul had entered this world again. That was why she was here.
Mala tried hard to concentrate and make out whom this dark power belonged to but as much as she willed herself to identify the trace – she didn’t recognize it. It was a weak one she noticed. Weaker than she had expected it to be, but it held potential. She knew it would grow and would threaten the good in this world one day – starting off with her sons.
Could that be? Could it be it’s him?
Mala knew only one whose aim it was to claim her son’s soul. Scratch. She had put him in his place the last time they had met; had sent him to the depths of the same blue seas he had once imprisoned her in. And she had believed that this was enough to make sure he would leave her sons alone – at least for some time that is. But maybe she had been wrong. Maybe he had found a way to escape. Maybe he thought that his spell would bind her once again, preventing her from guarding these precious souls he so wanted to possess.
She had to find out; had to make sure he didn’t accomplish that.
A soft smile formed on her lips as she prepared herself for entering the realm she had feared so much when life had still been circulating in her veins. But times had changed. Her soul long ago had stopped to dread him and his kind. They had no power anymore. Not over a soul that was lost in the vacuity between life and death. He could not harm her.
And with this thought filling her every mind she disappeared in the waves to enter his world...
